About the Foundation
For people with disabilities, barriers often stand in the way of full participation in society. While physical and economic challenges are obvious, others such as attitudinal barriers are not. Throughout ancient and present times, people with disabilities have been looked upon with a wide range of stereotypical attitudes and generalizations from the general public. These attitudinal barriers have ranged from pity to fear, and in some cases, even include hatred and violence.
During the Middle Ages for example, the presence of a disability was seen as punishment for sins. And as early as the mid-20th century, people with disabilities were routinely institutionalized, locked away and at times, made the subject of medical experimentation. Although these examples are extreme, many forms of discrimination remain in society today. The CORE Foundation strives to help eliminate these discriminatory barriers while improving the transition for those trying to cross them.
The CORE Foundation was formed in 2006 to help break down the barriers in our society that affect people with disabilities. We help to create public works and public spaces that are welcoming to all people. These spaces, either virtual or not, will foster positive connections for people with disabilities and people without disabilities. These spaces will enhance natural affinities based on common interests, life experiences and mutual respect. By including, accepting and involving everyone, we aim to raise awareness by leveling the playing field. When everyone can participate, everyone can grow and that's what the CORE Foundation is all about.
